Introducing quantum mechanics, the "science of uncertainty"

Science unearths immutable truths and seeks to help us understand our origin and the meaning of life and thus provide us with knowledge and certainty.

Nothing is nobler than knowing and aligning with one's purpose to provide meaning to life and direction amid uncertainties.

Conflicts, exorbitant global inflations, climate concerns, the pandemic and political instability, are all contributory factors to the present uncertainties.

Quantum mechanics is the "science of uncertainty." Particles in the quantum realm behave in unusual and unfamiliar ways. Insights from this branch of physics will help solve the world's most complex problems.

This article leverages the principles and insights of quantum behaviours and applies them to personal development and career success. The key is to align our thoughts and purpose, and that's the focus of this article.

The material and subatomic realities

quantum realm

Quantum mechanics seamlessly connects the material and subatomic realms in mysterious ways. Scientists are grappling to make sense of the quantum realm. They are desperately trying to understand immaterial existence through the lens and rules of the material universe. It's an oxymoronic conundrum.

Latent potential resides at the unseen subatomic levels of reality.

The Holy Bible articulates it like this: "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." (Hebrews 11:1)

There is an unseen reality through which all material things are birthed. "Quantum thinking" provides practical ways to transcend our self-imposed natural limitations and realise our infinite potential originating from the subatomic realm.

"Quantum thinking" explained

Woman in contemplation

"Quantum thinking" is the ability to hold multiple opposing thoughts simultaneously and put the appropriate thought into action at the optimum time. It's the ability to accept that truth doesn't always have to make sense. Truth is immutable whether we accept or reject it.

New ideas, thoughts and information compel us to make sense of our ever-changing reality. We decide which thoughts (or ideas) to invest in. We qualify the thoughts we accept against our preconceived beliefs and biases. In most cases, if they match our perceptions of the world, we keep them, and if they don't, we're likely to reject them.

"Quantum thinking" challenges this behaviour because it demands adopting thoughts and ideas that may not align with our preconceived notions and biases but are true. It's a radical way of thinking that requires pursuing objective truth.

"For as he thinks in his heart, so is he… (‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭23:7‬)

The Power of Thoughts

Thoughts are innumerable and accessible through thinking and imagination.

Each independent thought (like specks of light) illuminates new possibilities.

A growth mindset is essential for quantum thinking because it accepts new and better information to rewire erroneous beliefs. It's an active commitment to a life of learning and growth.

"Quantum thinking" is comparable to what Physicists refer to as "superposition" (to exist in multiple positions simultaneously). When the subatomic particle is measured, the superposition collapses. At the precise moment of measurement, the particle chooses one state to be in over all others, which is the state that the measuring instrument will observe.

Nobody quite understands why particles behave like this in the quantum realm, and it's inexplicable.

Quantum-inspired thinking for optimal living

Quantum-inspired thinking draws metaphorical insights from principles of quantum mechanics. These principles include adopting a holistic perspective that emphasizes the interconnectedness of natural systems, accepting the inherent probability and uncertainty that characterize reality, embracing the concepts of superposition and entanglement, which illustrate the interconnectedness and existence of multiple states of things simultaneously, recognizing the observer effect, where the act of observation shapes the outcome, acknowledging non-linearity, which highlights complex cause-and-effect relationships, promoting adaptive thinking characterized by contextual flexibility, and encouraging an interdisciplinary approach that leverages multiple disciplines to expand understanding.

This quantum-inspired thinking approach offers a fresh lens for enhancing situational awareness and refining problem-solving techniques. It diverges from traditional linear thinking, pushing boundaries and inviting innovative perspectives.

Embracing this mode of thinking can establish the foundation for creating unique value, fostering innovation, and facilitating personal growth. By comprehending and integrating the principles of quantum-inspired thinking, we can unearth actionable insights that profoundly transform our perspectives and guide our actions.

Furthermore, while not a conventional application, it is intriguing to consider how we can weave these principles into various aspects of our lives. They have the potential to amplify overall well-being and lead us toward success in areas such as physical health, mental and emotional well-being, learning and development, social relationships, and the cultivation of spiritual and moral values.

Physical Health

Although our body appears tangible, it encapsulates complex and interconnected biological, chemical, and neurological networks. Beyond this broad perspective, cells demonstrate intricate activities regulated by molecular mechanisms. Moreover, both observable and nuanced electrical impulses shape our physiological functions, all orchestrated by inherent, complex mechanisms that conform to natural and universal laws. We achieve optimal health by aligning with these systems—through a balanced diet, regular exercise, positive thinking, and self-care.

Mental and Emotional Health

Our cognitive framework provides a logical and rational foundation. However, a myriad of impulses, emotions, subconscious beliefs, and memories exist beneath this surface. These underlying electromagnetic currents significantly influence our thoughts and actions. Consciously navigating this dual realm—through breathwork (a therapeutic practice that involves consciously controlling and manipulating one's breathing patterns to achieve specific physical, mental, or emotional outcomes), positive thinking, regular exercise and rest, and a wholesome diet—is vital for holistic mental and emotional well-being.

Learning and Development

Structured educational systems provide foundational knowledge crucial for societal harmony and prosperity; however, there's also an extensive realm of experiential and self-directed learning vital for exceptional living and maximizing one's potential. This combination of formal and informal education fosters a comprehensive understanding of our surroundings (internal and external), promotes self-awareness and unlocks one's full capabilities.

Social Relationships

Although societal norms guide our interactions, personal histories, values, and perceptions influence individual behaviours. Embracing this dual perspective deepens our connections, promoting genuine relationships surpassing conventions. This approach fosters inclusivity and mutual understanding and counters divisive tribalism.

Spiritual and Moral Values

While religious doctrines and moral teachings outline paths to spiritual and ethical living, an inherent moral compass exists within us, aligning with profound truth, intuition, and wisdom. However, this internal moral compass requires deliberate nurturing to ensure consistent expression and manifestation, leading to knowledge, understanding, discernment, and unconditional love.

Incorporating quantum-inspired thinking across these five pivotal areas can lead us to a profound transformation that transcends the boundaries of our everyday lives.

The mystery of quantum mechanics

Quantum mechanics is a branch of science that seeks to explain the behaviour of particles at subatomic levels.

The mystery of quantum mechanics is that until a subatomic particle is observed and measured, it exists in all the possible states it could be in simultaneously.

In other words, every probable outcome exists at the subatomic level until a decision is made as to which direction is taken. In this regard, particles in the quantum realm could be loosely considered omnipresent.

Particles in the quantum realm behave even more peculiarly when two particles interact. They entangle and act as an indivisible entity.

In the next section, we discuss what this means in the context of the natural and supernatural realms.

Quantum entanglement explained

Quantum entanglement

What happens in the material (physical) realm impacts what happens in the immaterial realm and vice-versa. In other words, our decisions in this life have consequences on the other side of reality. This is the essence of what is known as "quantum entanglement". For example, if there are two closed boxes, each dispatched to opposite ends of the earth. In one box is a left-handed glove, and in the other is a right-handed glove. Together they form a pair of gloves (comparable to pairs of entangled particles). You won't know which box holds which glove until you open one of the boxes (or both). They will always be complementary opposites.

Quantum entanglement behaves much more mysteriously than in this example. An accurate illustration would be that the gloves were neither left-handed nor right-handed when initially placed in the boxes. Only when one box is opened will it be revealed whether it is a left-handed or right-handed glove. Simultaneously, the other glove will also be a direct opposite to compliment the first opened box. So, if the first box contained a left-handed glove, the second box would have a right-handed glove and vice-versa.

Once we know the position of one entangled item, we can determine the state of its entangled equivalent (in this example, a glove) irrespective of the separation by space and distance.

Here's the explanation of this mystery. When two quantum particles interact, they are no longer two separate particles but one interwoven wave function. In essence, they become two sides of the same coin. That's why the gloves in the opened boxes are always complimentary in the scenario mentioned earlier.

In my opinion, we can confidently conclude that the natural and supernatural realms are intertwined from this insight. They are two sides of the same coin. Think of "quantum entanglement" as twins separated at birth. Their connection is far-reaching and seemingly eternal.

To further bring "quantum entanglement" to life, we know that our consciousness resides in the material realm, housed in our minds and expresses itself through the body. Now, when death occurs, consciousness is no longer in the mind of its host but in an equivalent realm imperceptible with material instruments. Although an invisible and impenetrable chasm separates the two domains, their connection is undeniable and consequential.

So, in other words, life and death are "quantum entanglement." They are one and the same, sharing the same essence. Once we understand this, we recognise that life and death affect and influence each other. They are a continuum and complete the circle of life.

Principle #1: make up your mind

Man contemplating

Once you decide something (positive or negative), every part of your existence - mind, heart, soul and spirit - will align to make it a reality.

For example, if you tell yourself that you are not good at something, you will subconsciously affirm your beliefs. Thereby making it your lived experience and reality. Until you reprogram your thinking to believe differently, you are what you think.

Make a decision about the direction of your life to prevent an unfulfilled life. Otherwise, circumstance will become your master as you fluctuate to the whims of indiscriminate events.

A life without purpose is like being in a state of superposition. You feel busy and pulled in multiple directions, yet you feel like you have not made progress and your existence has little meaning.

To succeed and have a fulfilling life, you must have a clear vision and purpose. Imagine the outcome of your goal before embarking on it and experience the positive emotions felt by achieving it. Your subconscious mind cannot distinguish between your imagination and actual reality. As far as it's concerned, they are one and the same.

It's critical to success to be emotionally invested in your goal. Emotions are potent activators and a powerful energy source we require to propel forward.

Avoid the pursuit of goals that you feel indifferent about. It's a waste of your energy and time.

Discover your passion, and go for it. You will be unstoppable.

The late Steve Jobs once said, "I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love."

Quantum mechanics - "many-worlds" theory

Many-worlds theory

"Superposition" behaviour (to exist in multiple positions simultaneously) is based on empirical evidence from the quantum realm. Although it's counter-intuitive and perhaps seems irrational, it is a fact nonetheless.

Here are some examples of modern devices that have been designed using the principles discovered in quantum mechanics: the laser, microchip transistor, electron microscope, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Global Positioning System (GPS) and computers.

The full potential of quantum mechanics is still unknown. Theoretical physicists have developed multiple hypotheses based on the insight of "superposition".

One of the well-known and popular ideas originating from "superposition" is the "many-worlds" theory. It's otherwise known as the multiverse (a hypothetical collection of identical or diverse universes, including our own).

The "many-worlds" theory states that anything that can happen does happen. This would mean that every probable outcome to any situation is played out in the multiverse. The movie: "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" runs wild with this theory, and it's stupendously good fun.

Principle #2: embrace change

At the core of quantum mechanics is evidence of profound uncertainty.

Our own lives often feel uncertain and unpredictable. So, don't worry if you haven't figured out your own life yet or if some things don't go your way. This is congruent with the natural world and the quantum realm.

In my new career development book: "Accelerate: Your Career Ascension Guide", I provide practical tools and tips to help you achieve your goals and overcome your limitations.

In the next section, you will learn valuable insights to succeed through change.

How to embrace change at work

Couple hugging in their new home

This section provides practical tips to overcome uncertainty at work caused by business transformation. I will use the story of Joanne, a fictitious character, to bring this to life.

Joanne is a middle-aged mother of two young pre-teen children. She is a management consultant for a renowned technology consultancy and has been a working professional for over 15 years.

Joanne has a "fixed-minded" (innate adversity to change). However, she wishes she had a "growth mindset" (the ability to thrive on learning and developing new skills).

To embrace uncertainty and thrive within the constraints of her personality would mean:

  1. Acknowledging where she stands on the "innovation curve". Only 2.5% of people are "innovators", 13.5% of people are "early adopters", 34% of people are "early majority", 34% of people are "late majority", and 16% of people are "laggards".

  2. Assuming Joanna falls within the "late majority" category, she would need to devise a strategy to manage herself through significant business transformation.

Strategy for Joanne to successfully embrace change at work

When Joanne learns about a significant change at work, the following 12 steps plan will help her.

  1. Acknowledge her feelings about the change initiative. The emotions could be shock, denial, anger, fear, depression, sadness, etc.

  2. Accept that she cannot prevent, delay or sabotage the change, and recognise that the change is inevitable and already underway.

  3. Enquire about the business intent of the change initiative ("the why") and the benefits the organisation seeks to achieve.

  4. Recognise that the change is nothing personal.

  5. Find out how she can add value and support the successful transition to the new desired state. In reality, she may need to upskill in new areas.

  6. Identify any skills gap she needs to fill to be part of the organisation's future state. Make a personal plan of action to close her skills gap or to acquire the learnings necessary to succeed.

  7. Proactively seek support, training and coaching to achieve the competencies required in the future state.

  8. Develop an optimistic mindset to help her identify opportunities in adversity.

  9. Be prepared to invest in her own learning. Doing so puts the responsibility for her career development in her own hands.

  10. Incrementally work through her plan, and reward herself for every small achievement. This creates momentum and will boost her confidence.

  11. Communicate to her line manager the actions she's taking to acquire the relevant skills.

  12. Model the positive behaviour the business is seeking from its employees.

Employers and managers value employees who can embrace change and control their career development.

Quantum mechanics - the theory of everything

It's fair to say that scientists have been searching relentlessly for the scientific "theory of everything" (the formulae for material creation in the universe). The "superstring theory" is a branch of physics that looks promising.

"Superstring theory" seeks to explain all particles and subatomic forces in nature. It's modelled as vibrations of undetectable strings (like particles).

The component thought within "Superstring theory" that resonates with me (pun intended) is the notion that subatomic particles are a series of vibrations. The implication is that every subatomic particle vibrates at a particular frequency, and thus life is expressed at multiple frequencies.

Principle #3: discover your true purpose

Young scientist

Theoretical Physicists are committed to discovering the "theory of everything" to unlock the very secrets of life itself. We, too, should pursue the equivalent of finding and aligning with our purpose.

When we align with our purpose, our work and career become a natural extension of ourselves. We don't feel depleted by work. Instead, it energises us because it feeds our soul, quenches our first, and we can't get enough of it.

On a much deeper level, our purpose is the very reason for our existence. It is our divine mandate, and when we discover and follow it, everything seemingly conspires towards our success. We become unstoppable. We become attractive to others because they see a type of light in our eyes that is uncommon. Even the so-called "haters" will not be able to throw you off course.

Most importantly, your light will shine so brightly that you will positively impact your colleagues and community. You will leave an indelible impression on every soul that encounters you.

Find your purpose and fulfil it. After all, that is your ultimate legacy.
